IIT campus Nigeria The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), one of India’s top engineering institutions, is set to set up a campus in Nigeria by 2026 as part of its international expansion. This will be India’s first IIT campus in West Africa.
Overview
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is all set to establish an international campus in Nigeria, marking another major step in India’s plan to expand IITs globally. This comes after the successful establishment of IIT Madras Zanzibar (Tanzania) in 2023 — the first IIT campus outside India.
Location
The proposed site for the new IIT campus is in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, with discussions also considering Lagos as a secondary option for future expansion.
🔹 Agreement & Partnership
- The initiative is being jointly undertaken by the Government of India and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between IIT Madras and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education.
- The campus will be established under India’s “Study in India – Africa Connect” initiative.
🔹 Academic Focus
Initially, the campus will offer programs in:
- Data Science & Artificial Intelligence
- Renewable Energy & Sustainability
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Robotics and Mechatronics
- Entrepreneurship & Management
Purpose
- Strengthen India–Africa educational cooperation
- Provide world-class technical education to African students
- Foster research collaboration between Indian and Nigerian institutions
Courses will be taught by IIT faculty and Nigerian professors trained in collaboration with IIT Madras.
Why in Nigeria?
Indian universities are being encouraged to set up campuses abroad as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Through this expansion, India aims to share its academic potential with the rest of the world.
This campus will further enhance cooperation between India and Nigeria in the fields of education and technology.
India hopes to forge long-term partnerships by promoting science and technology education in the African continent.
The Nigerian government aims to make its country a regional technology hub. Nigeria believes that the establishment of a world-class IIT will accelerate this goal.
The Indian IIT will be useful in providing quality engineering and technology education to Nigerian students within the country. It will also help reduce the problem of ‘brain drain’ (students going abroad for higher education).
What stage are these campus works at?
Plans are underway to set up an IIT campus in Nigeria. The campus will be located at the Federal Government Academy (FGA) in Suleja. The campus is also known as the ‘Nigerian Academy for the Gifted’. The academy will be developed into a ‘Centre of Excellence’ with Indian assistance. A joint team from India and Nigeria will oversee the recruitment of faculty and the design of courses at the campus.
The first batch of undergraduate and postgraduate students is expected to start by 2026. The infrastructure and logistics of the campus will be managed by the Nigerian government. The exact final details of admission to this campus have not yet been announced. India has already set up an IIT campus in Tanzania in November 2023.
Expected Launch
The first academic session is expected to begin in mid-2026, with student intake starting around March–April 2026.
“Nigeria welcomes IIT’s presence, which will help boost our STEM ecosystem and skill development goals,”
— Prof. Tahir Mamman, Nigeria’s Minister of Education
