England’s thrilling win over India at Lord’s came with a sting in the tail. The English side has been docked two crucial points in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) and fined 10% of their match fees for a slow over-rate during the third Test — a move that’s shaken up the tournament standings.

The punishment was handed out after England were found short of the required overs, even after time allowances were factored in. This dropped their tally from 24 to 22 points out of a possible 36, causing their win percentage to dip from 66.67% to 61.11%. The result? England tumbled from second to third place, with Sri Lanka now climbing up to take the second spot in the standings.

What triggered the penalty?
The ICC acted under Article 16.11.2 of the World Test Championship playing conditions, which slaps teams with a one-point penalty for every over they fall short. England captain Ben Stokes accepted the ruling without contest, agreeing to the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson, part of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
Financial penalties were also enforced under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which requires players to forfeit 5% of their match fee per missing over. With Stokes owning up, no formal hearing was needed.
The charge came after observations from the match officials — on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Ahsan Raza, and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd — all of whom flagged the slow over-rate issue during the Lord’s Test.
A classic Test match — with a dramatic twist
The third Test at Lord’s was nothing short of a nail-biter. Both India and England posted identical scores in the first innings, keeping the match on a knife’s edge heading into the final days.
England managed to carve out a 192-run lead, setting India a daunting target in the fourth innings. India’s top order crumbled early, and it looked like curtains. But a spirited lower-order fightback, led by Ravindra Jadeja, sparked hope and nearly turned the tide. In the end, England held their nerve to clinch a 22-run win — a victory that gave them a 2-1 lead in the series.
While England celebrated the hard-fought win, the slow over-rate blunder means they’ll need to be more careful moving forward if they want to stay in the WTC race.
