At the end of the talks, President Trump contacted Russian President Putin on the phone and confirmed that there will be a direct meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine soon, after which a trilateral meeting will also be held.
First Meeting: Trump–Zelenskyy, Feb 28, 2025 (Washington, D.C.)
- On February 28, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump held a contentious Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Tensions ran high, and though it was billed as a chance to sign a minerals deal, the meeting ended abruptly with no agreement. Trump and Vice President Vance also criticized Zelenskyy publicly—coverage described it as a highly unusual diplomatic clash.

- Planned Second Meeting: Trump–Zelenskyy + Putin → Trilateral Summit Forthcoming
- Russian and Ukrainian
- Since then, developments have centered around arranging a second-level, three-way meeting (a “trilateral” summit) including Trump, Zelenskyy, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Key Milestones:
- August 15, 2025: Trump and Putin met in Alaska at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. While some progress was noted—Trump spoke of “headway” and “great progress”—no ceasefire or formal deal was reached.
- Following that meeting, Trump announced his intention to convene a second meeting including Zelenskyy and Putin, potentially with Trump mediating.
- Summary: What Does “Second Meeting” Mean Here?
- There’s no second in-person meeting yet between just Russia and Ukraine hosted by a U.S. President.
- Instead, the term refers to an upcoming trilateral summit, which is intended to follow Trump’s bilateral meeting with Putin. That planned summit would involve President Zelenskyy as well, aiming for direct peace negotiations among the three leaders.
