Self driving auto (also called autonomous vehicles, driverless cars, or robotic cars) are vehicles capable of sensing their environment and moving safely with little or no human input. They combine artificial intelligence (AI), sensors, cameras, radar, lidar, and advanced software to navigate roads, avoid obstacles, and follow traffic rules.

Levels of Autonomy

The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) defines 6 levels of automation:

  1. Level 0 – No automation (human controls everything).
  2. Level 1 – Driver assistance (adaptive cruise control, lane keeping).
  3. Level 2 – Partial automation (car can steer + accelerate/brake but driver must supervise).
  4. Level 3 – Conditional automation (car drives itself in some conditions; driver may need to take control).
  5. Level 4 – High automation (car drives itself in most environments, no driver needed in defined areas).
  6. Level 5 – Full automation (completely driverless in all conditions).

How Self Driving Auto Work

  • Sensors & Lidar: Detect objects, pedestrians, vehicles, and road markings.
  • Cameras: Recognize traffic signs, signals, and lane lines.
  • Radar: Measures distances and speed of other vehicles.
  • GPS & Mapping: Helps in navigation and route planning.
  • AI Algorithms: Analyze data, predict behavior of other vehicles/pedestrians, and make driving decisions.

With the growth of AI technology, cars and bikes have also been updated. Some automobile brands are already bringing self-driving cars that run without a driver. But now autos have also joined that category. The first self-driving auto in the country has been launched. Let’s know more about this now.

Self-driving technology is just beginning to develop in our country. However, this technology, which was limited to cars until now, has now reached auto rickshaws. A fully automated auto that runs without the need for a driver is ready to hit the roads.

Self-Driving Electric Auto:

Leading electric three-wheeler brand Omega Seaki Mobility has developed the country’s first driverless electric auto rickshaw. It runs completely automated. It reaches the location without the need for a driver. Auto makers say that this will bring new changes in local transport.

Features are As Follows:
The Omega Seamaster self-driving car is available in two variants. Passenger version and cargo version. The passenger version is designed for people, while the cargo version is designed for goods transport. This self-driving car comes with a 10.3 kWh battery. It can travel up to 120 km on a single charge. It runs on AI-based self-driving technology. It works with Lidar technology and GPS system. It detects obstacles up to six meters away and designs a route accordingly. There are features like multi-sensor navigation and remote safety. If you set a location first, it can automatically and safely select a route and reach the destination.

Prices:
The Phase 1 trials of this auto were successful. It traveled a distance of 3 kilometers with seven stops and reached its destination safely. Representatives say that these autos will be very useful in airports, gated communities, and industrial areas. As for the prices of this auto.. The price of the passenger version is Rs. 4 lakhs and the price of the cargo version is Rs. 4.15 lakhs. Bookings have already started. Deliveries will start soon.

Benefits

✅ Reduced human errors → fewer accidents
✅ Convenience → no need for active driving
✅ Mobility for elderly & disabled
✅ Optimized fuel use & traffic flow
✅ Potentially lower transport costs (robotaxis, delivery vans)

Challenges & Concerns

⚠️ Safety – Autonomous systems are not perfect; accidents have occurred.
⚠️ Legal issues – Who is responsible in case of an accident?
⚠️ Ethical dilemmas – How should AI make decisions in unavoidable crash scenarios?
⚠️ Cybersecurity – Risk of hacking and system failures.
⚠️ Infrastructure – Roads, traffic systems, and regulations need to adapt.

Examples of Companies Working on It

  • Tesla (Autopilot, Full Self-Driving Beta)
  • Waymo (Google’s self-driving unit) – Robotaxis in some U.S. cities
  • Cruise (owned by GM) – Autonomous taxis in California
  • Uber & Lyft – Experimented with autonomous rides
  • Apple, Baidu, Nvidia – Working on AI systems for self-driving tech

Future of Self-Driving Autos

  • Urban areas may see robotaxis & autonomous delivery vans in the next few years.
  • Long-haul trucking is another strong use case.
  • Widespread adoption of fully autonomous (Level 5) vehicles may take 10–20 years, depending on laws, tech progress, and public acceptance.
