Why Were So Many Student Visas Revoked?
According to officials, the “vast majority” of these cases involved serious offenses like assault, driving under the influence (DUI), burglary, and even support for terrorism.
While the department did not clarify what exactly counted as “support for terrorism,” the Trump administration has previously targeted some students who protested in support of Palestine, accusing them of showing antisemitic behavior.
Breakdown of the Visa Revocations
- Around 4,000 visas were revoked due to students directly breaking US law.
- Another 200–300 visas were cancelled under INA 3B, a section of US law that broadly defines terrorism as any act that endangers human life or violates American law.
Stricter Vetting for Students
Earlier this year, the Trump administration even paused international student visa appointments. When the process resumed in June, new social media vetting rules were introduced.
Applicants are now required to make their social media profiles public so officers can check for “hostility toward US citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.”
Officials were also instructed to screen for students who support or promote terrorist groups or engage in anti-Semitic harassment or violence.
What US Officials Are Saying
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers in May that thousands of student visas had already been revoked since January.
“We probably have more to do,” Rubio said on 20 May. “We’re going to continue to revoke the visas of people who are here as guests and are disrupting our higher education facilities.”
Criticism From Democrats
Democrats have slammed the move, calling it an attack on due process and warning that the policy unfairly targets international students.
Despite the controversy, officials say the crackdown will continue.
