The most expensive divorce case in the UAE’s judicial history has been filed in the Abu Dhabi Family Court, where a woman has claimed financial compensation of one billion dirhams, or more than 77 billion Pakistani rupees, from her ex-husband.

The largest divorce dispute in the UAE, one of the wealthiest societies in the Middle East, is being heard in the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court.

The case involves a Caribbean Muslim couple who have been living in the UAE for the past 18 years.

The 39-year-old woman, who has been married for two decades, filed the lawsuit in April 2025, claiming that she and her husband had built a financial empire while living in the UAE, and that their children were raised there.

The woman’s claim for one billion dirhams does not include child support, as it is being presented in a separate case.

According to the law firm’s lawyer, Brian James, both parties in the case come from very wealthy backgrounds and the amount presented in the case reflects the size of their family assets and joint business partnerships.

He added that the focus of the case is the fair distribution of joint assets and the UAE’s strong legal system is fully capable of handling such complex matters.

It should be noted that earlier, the same court had awarded a divorce settlement in favor of an American woman of more than 100 million dirhams, which was a record at the time.

If the current case is decided in favor of the plaintiff, it will be considered the most expensive divorce settlement in Gulf history
